Beatbocsio'n Gymraeg

Daeth Ed Holden, aka Mr Phormula, i'r ysgol heddiw i rhedeg gweithdy beatbocsio gyda disgyblion Blwyddyn 10 a 12.

Ed Holden, aka Mr Phormula, came to the school today to run a beatboxing workshop with Year 10 and 12 pupils.

Eisteddfod Success

Llongyfarchiadau mawr i'r grwp llefaru am ennill lle i gynrychioli Caerdydd a'r Fro yn Eisteddfod yr Urdd y Bala. Cystadlon nhw heddiw yn yr Eisteddfod Sir yn Ysgol Glantaf a dod a chlod i'r ysgol.

Congratulations to the reciting group who won a place to represent Cardiff and the Vale in the National Urdd Eisteddfod which will be held in Bala in May. They competed in the county Eisteddfod today in Ysgol Glantaf and gave a tremendous performance.

The Year 8 and 9 boys who took part, reciting a poem about a referee in a football match, were Adam Wood, Patrick Sheppard, Morgan Barrington-Williams, Jack Jenner, Angus James, Dylan Lloyd-Doyle, Robert Lewis, Josh Lloyd-Doyle, Thomas Jose and Ellis Cartlidge-Llewellyn.

The Welsh Department is extremely proud of the work they had put in to prepare for the competition and delighted with their success. Pob lwc bois!

Spelling Bees take part in South Wales final

Year 7 pupils travelled down the M4 to Bryngwyn School in Llanelli to take part in the South Wales round of Spelling Bee.

The pupils representing the school were Christopher Lewis, Lauren Tweed, Grace Marshall and Josie Corkill in Welsh and Benjamin Batten, Lauren Light and Nia Evans in French.

For the Spelling Bee challenge pupils have 60 seconds to translate as many English words into Welsh as possible and then spell them using the Welsh alphabet - not an easy task. As well as Welsh, there was also a French, German and Spanish competition. 

The pupils performed extremely well in the first round and Christopher Lewis and Lauren Tweed beat off stiff competition to make it through to the second round.

The competition was too strong and the standard was exceptionally high and therefore, unfortunately, Cowbridge pupils didn't make one of the four spots in the national finals. However, the pupils had a great time and benefitted from the valuable experience of taking part in the competition. They did themselves and the school proud!

Congratulations to Chris, Lauren, Grance and Josie and all the pupils who took part in the earlier stages of Spelling Bee! Llongyfarchiadau!

The pupils have had a very busy day, starting from Cowbridge Comprehensive School at 7.15 to travel to the Urdd Camp near Bala in north Wales. This is an account of the afternoon by one of the pupils. 

Cofio Senghenydd 1913

Ar 14 Hydref, 1913 lladdwyd 439 o lowyr mewn ffrwydrad yn Senghennydd - y trychineb glofaol gwaethaf yn hanes Prydain. Mae disgyblion Y Bontfaen wedi dysgu am hanes y digwyddiad trist a maen nhw wedi gwylio'r rhaglen Cofio Senghenydd ar S4C. Isod, maen nhw wedi ysgrifennu am y raglen a hanes y trychineb.

On 14 October 1913, 439 miners were killed in an explosion in Senghenydd - the worst mining diasater in British history. Cowbridge pupils have learnt about the history of this sad event and they have watched the programme Cofio Senghenydd (Remembering Senghenydd) on S4C. Below, they have written about the programme and the history of the disaster.

Treasoning!

Year 8 have been experimenting with giving 'BETTER REASONS' for opinions. Giving reasons for opinions is really important, and as your reasons get better - so do your levels! Look:

 

Level 5 Speaking: “give reasons to explain your ideas”

Level 6 Speaking: “providing reasons to support your views”

Level 7 Speaking: "express opinions using evidence at times"

In this particular task, Year 8 had to give reasons to support (roots) or oppose (wind)  the statement: "Mae'r Bontfaen yn anhygoel". The better their positive reason - the longer the root and the better the negative reason - the stronger the wind. Decide for yourself - will these trees stay standing because of their strong positive roots or fall down due to the strong negative winds?

Final round of Spelling Bee - new words released

The countdown has begun for the final round of Spelling Bee, which will be held on the 19th of July in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Manou Davies, who won the South Wales Regional Final of Spelling Bee, will be representing the school.

Buzzing after Spelling Success

Llongyfarchiadau i Manou Davies am ennill rownd rhanbarthol De Cymru o'r gystadleuaeth Spelling Bee!

Congratulations to Manou Davies for winning the South Wales regional competition of Spelling Bee!

Lowri Williams, Sarah Jones and Manou Davies from year 7 represented the school at the competition held in Llanelli this afternoon.

For the Spelling Bee challenge pupils have 60 seconds to translate as many English words into Welsh as possible and then spell them - not an easy task. As well as Welsh, there was also a French, German and Spanish competition.

Manou won two heats before winning the final stage of the competition beating off stiff competition from pupils from Cardiff High School, Howells School and John Beddoes School. As regional winner she received a trophy as well as a cup which she'll keep for a year. She will be competing in the National Final in the summer. Pob lwc!

Spelling Bee School Winners

Llongyfarchiadau mawr (huge congratulations!) to everyone who took part in today's year 7 Spelling Bee competition. Mrs Ellis and Mr Morgan were astounded by the standard of the Spelling Bees.

The Spelling Bee challenge is to translate from English and spell as many Welsh words as possible correctly in 60 seconds - not an easy task. There were four places available for pupils from Cowbridge School to go through to the Spelling Bee regional finals and it was a tightly fought contest of a very high standard.

Lowri Williams from 7.8 and Jordan Meek from 7.4 both scored an incredible 16 points and Sarah Jones from 7.2 and Manou Davies from 7.5 both scored 15 points - which takes the four of them through to the South Wales regional finals.

Cawson ni'r fraint o ymweliad gan Ioan Kidd, awdur cyfrol o straeon byrion o'r enw 'O'r Cyrion' heddiw. Mwynheuodd tua 20 o ddisgyblion o ysgolion Y Bont Faen, Stanwell a Howell's wrando ar Ioan Kidd yn siarad am gefndir y straeon a'i brofiad personol e a arweiniodd at ysgrifennu'r stori 'Yr Ymwelydd'. Daeth a'r stori yn fyw i'r disgyblion drwy ddisgrifio, gan ddefnyddio tafodiaith de orllewin Cymru, ei brofiad anghyfforddus o fod yng nghlwb y gweithwyr yng Nghwmafan gyda'i dad pan doedd e ddim yn teimlo fel rhan o'r gymuned ers symud i weithio yn y brifddinas.

Fe wnaeth Ioan Kidd ganmol cwestiynau craff a sylwgar y disgyblion yn ogystal a safon uchel eu Cymraeg.

Diolchodd Mrs Thomas, y Pennaeth, iddo am ei amser gan rannu'r ffaith ei bod hi wedi mwynhau darllen y straeon ei hun ac yn gallu uniaethu gyda'r cymeriadau.

The Welsh department had the pleasure of a visit from Ioan Kidd, the author of a book of short stories entitled 'O'r Cyrion' (From the Fringes). Twenty pupils from Cowbridge, Stanwell and Howell's schools enjoyed listening to Ioan Kidd talking about the background to the stories and his personal experience that led to him writing the story 'Yr Ymwelydd' (The Visitor). He brought the story to life for the pupils by describing, in his south west Wales dialect, the uncomfortable experience of being in the workingmen's club in Cwmavon with his father and workers from the steelworks when he felt that he wasn't a part of the community since moving to work in the capital.

Ioan Kidd praised the pupils' astute and perseptive questioning as well as the high standard of their spoken Welsh.

Mrs Thomas, the Headteacher, thanked him for his time and shared the fact that she has enjoyed reading the stories herself and can identify with the characters.
