Shwmae! We used our Welsh on 14th Oct!

On Tuesday 14 October, pupils and staff at the school took part in Diwrnod Shwmae or 'Shwmae Day', which is a national celebration of the Welsh language. 

A special effort was made to start conversations in Welsh and to use as much Welsh as possible. Also, the Year 7 and 8 Clwb Cymraeg (Welsh Club) created a collage to mark the occasion and the staff who learn Welsh once a week after school joined in the fun too! The Welsh department would like to thank pupils and staff for their enthusiasm!

A full classroom of pupils came to the first Clwb Cymraeg of the year!

They took part in a competition to build the highest tower possible out of spaghetti, marshmallows and sellotape. A group of Year 7 boys won a box of Celebrations!

Da iawn to everybody who took part. The next Clwb Cymraeg will be the same time, same place next week - Dydd Mawrth, 12.30 in B1C.

Clwb Cymraeg is back!

Spelling Bees take part in South Wales final

Year 7 pupils travelled down the M4 to Bryngwyn School in Llanelli to take part in the South Wales round of Spelling Bee.

The pupils representing the school were Christopher Lewis, Lauren Tweed, Grace Marshall and Josie Corkill in Welsh and Benjamin Batten, Lauren Light and Nia Evans in French.

For the Spelling Bee challenge pupils have 60 seconds to translate as many English words into Welsh as possible and then spell them using the Welsh alphabet - not an easy task. As well as Welsh, there was also a French, German and Spanish competition. 

The pupils performed extremely well in the first round and Christopher Lewis and Lauren Tweed beat off stiff competition to make it through to the second round.

The competition was too strong and the standard was exceptionally high and therefore, unfortunately, Cowbridge pupils didn't make one of the four spots in the national finals. However, the pupils had a great time and benefitted from the valuable experience of taking part in the competition. They did themselves and the school proud!

Congratulations to Chris, Lauren, Grance and Josie and all the pupils who took part in the earlier stages of Spelling Bee! Llongyfarchiadau!

Dathliadau Dydd Gwyl Dewi

Ar ddydd Gwener 21 Chwefror cynhaliwyd Eisteddfod yr ysgol.

Uchafbwynt y dydd oedd cystadleuaeth côr y llysoedd - roedd llys Llywelyn, Glyndŵr, Hywel Dda a Gruffydd yn brwydro am y Cwpan Canu. Y darn gosod oedd Calon Lân a codwyd y to!

Enillwyr corau Blwyddyn 8 oedd Llys Llywelyn (8.3 ac 8.4).

Roedd hi'n amhosibl dewis enillydd ar gyfer corau Blwyddyn 7 felly rhanwyd y gwpan rhwng Llys Hywel Dda (7.3 ac 7.4) a Gruffydd (7.7 ac 7.8).

Clwb Cymraeg mis Ionawr

Mae disgyblion y Clwb Cymraeg wedi bod yn brysur ym mis Ionawr yn cymryd rhan mewn cwis enwogion Cymru, yn creu crysau rygbi origami ac yn blasu bwyd Cymreig. Mae'r Clwb Cymraeg amser cinio bob dydd Iau yn B1C.

The Clwb Cymraeg pupils have been busy in January taking part in a Welsh celebrities quiz, making origami rugby shirts and tasting Welsh foods - and speaking Welsh of course! The Clwb Cynraeg is every Thursday lunchtime in B1C.

Diwrnod Ieithoedd Ewrop / European Languages Day 2013

 

 Shwmae! Bonjour! Guten Tag! Hola!

To celebrate European Day of Languages pupils enjoyed trying European foods and asking for them in European Languages! Pupils and staff have been taking part in quizzes and activities in regestration and language lessons and have also 'shown us their tongues' for our video. Watch this space for more information!

This is Bethan Sloan! Bethan is Cowbridge Comprehensive School's Leader of Bilingualism. Bethan's job is to promote and support the use of Welsh around the school. Bethan will be around with her team helping staff and pupils with Welsh, lets get to know her a bit better...

The Welsh Department and the Urdd need your help. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how you would like the Clwb Cymraeg to run from September?

Sion from the Urdd has been working with us over the past two weeks to show examples of what we could be doing in a KS3 Clwb Cymraeg. We have run Coginio Cymraeg and Sgiliau Syrcas. What other activities would you like to do in Clwb Cymraeg? When would you like it to run?

Sgiliau Syrcas yn y Clwb Cymraeg

Mwynheuodd disgyblion blwyddyn 7 ac 8 ymarfer eu sgiliau syrcas heddiw - ac ymarfer eu Cymraeg.

Daeth Sion o'r Urdd i gynnal gweithdai gyda'r disgyblion yn ystod yr wythnos gweithgareddau. Bydd e nol eto bore dydd Mercher.

Pupils from years 7 and 8 practiced their circus skills today - and practice their Welsh too.

Sion from the Urdd held workshops with the pupils during activities week. He will be back again Wednesday morning.
