The pupils have had a very busy day, starting from Cowbridge Comprehensive School at 7.15 to travel to the Urdd Camp near Bala in north Wales. This is an account of the afternoon by one of the pupils.

Arweinwyr Dwyieithrwydd/Leaders of Bilingualism

Here are the Sixth Form Prefects responsible for leading Bilingualism in Cowbridge Comprehensive. Their job is to promote and support the use of Welsh around the school. Lets get to know them a bit better...

Catrin Howells

"Shwmae, Catrin Howells ydw i! Dw i’n un deg chwech oed a dw i’n byw yn Maendy, ger Y Bont Faen. Dw i ym Mlwyddyn Deuddeg a dw i’n astudio Saesneg, Hanes, Ffrangeg, Cerddoriaeth ac Addysg Grefyddol. Dw i’n cerddorol iawn a dw i’n chwarae clarinet, piano a sacsoffon. Dw i’n aelod o gerddorfa'r sir sy’n cyfarfod bob dydd Gwener. Dw i’n mwynhau darllen hefyd, a fy hoff lyfr i ydy “The Book Thief”. Dw i’n mwynhau dysgu Cymraeg achos dw i’n mwynhau ieithoedd eraill a dw i’n hoffi cyfathrebol gyda pobl dros y wlad."

Elaenor Morgan

"Helo! Eleanor ydw i a rydw i’n un deg saith oed. Rydw i’n byw ym Mro Morgannwg, ond mae teulu a fi yn dod o Loegr. Rydw i'n mwynhau sglefrio iâ a ddarllen yn fy amser hamdden. Eleni, rydw i’n astudio pump U/G ar hyn o bryd; mathemateg, hanes, daeryddiaeth, Ffrangeg a mathemateg pellach. Mae diddordeb gyda fi mewn hanes, ond hoffwn i barhau i astudio tipyn bach o Gymraeg hefyd, achos rydw i wrth fy modd gyda ieithoedd!"

Hana Fletcher-Peters

"Helo, Hana ydw i a dw i’n un deg chwech oed. Dw i’n byw mewn pentref o'r enw Craig Penllyn gyda fy mam, fy tad a weithiau fy chwaer, Asha. Mae hi’n mynd i Brifysgol Bristol, ble mae hi'n gwneud cwrs ysgrifennu caneuon. Rydw i’n mynd i ysgol Y Bont Faen, ble dw i’n astudio Ffrangeg, Almaeneg, hanes a mathemateg. Fy hobi i ydy darllen. Hefyd dw i’n mwynhau cerddoriaeth roc, jazz a gwerin. Dw i’n hoffi dysgu Cymraeg achos dw i’n mwynhau siarad iaith arall yn aml. Ar fy ngwyliau delfrydol baswn i’n teithio a cwrdd â phobl newydd.

Cofio Senghenydd 1913

Ar 14 Hydref, 1913 lladdwyd 439 o lowyr mewn ffrwydrad yn Senghennydd - y trychineb glofaol gwaethaf yn hanes Prydain. Mae disgyblion Y Bontfaen wedi dysgu am hanes y digwyddiad trist a maen nhw wedi gwylio'r rhaglen Cofio Senghenydd ar S4C. Isod, maen nhw wedi ysgrifennu am y raglen a hanes y trychineb.

On 14 October 1913, 439 miners were killed in an explosion in Senghenydd - the worst mining diasater in British history. Cowbridge pupils have learnt about the history of this sad event and they have watched the programme Cofio Senghenydd (Remembering Senghenydd) on S4C. Below, they have written about the programme and the history of the disaster.

Diwrnod Ieithoedd Ewrop / European Languages Day 2013

 

 Shwmae! Bonjour! Guten Tag! Hola!

To celebrate European Day of Languages pupils enjoyed trying European foods and asking for them in European Languages! Pupils and staff have been taking part in quizzes and activities in regestration and language lessons and have also 'shown us their tongues' for our video. Watch this space for more information!

This is Bethan Sloan! Bethan is Cowbridge Comprehensive School's Leader of Bilingualism. Bethan's job is to promote and support the use of Welsh around the school. Bethan will be around with her team helping staff and pupils with Welsh, lets get to know her a bit better...

Beth wyt ti'n feddwl o Clwb Cymraeg?

The Welsh Department and the Urdd need your help. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how you would like the Clwb Cymraeg to run from September?

Sion from the Urdd has been working with us over the past two weeks to show examples of what we could be doing in a KS3 Clwb Cymraeg. We have run Coginio Cymraeg and Sgiliau Syrcas. What other activities would you like to do in Clwb Cymraeg? When would you like it to run?

Sgiliau Syrcas yn y Clwb Cymraeg

Mwynheuodd disgyblion blwyddyn 7 ac 8 ymarfer eu sgiliau syrcas heddiw - ac ymarfer eu Cymraeg.

Daeth Sion o'r Urdd i gynnal gweithdai gyda'r disgyblion yn ystod yr wythnos gweithgareddau. Bydd e nol eto bore dydd Mercher.

Pupils from years 7 and 8 practiced their circus skills today - and practice their Welsh too.

Sion from the Urdd held workshops with the pupils during activities week. He will be back again Wednesday morning.

Coginio Cymraeg

Cafodd disgyblion blwyddyn 7 ac 8 llawer o hwyl amser cinio heddiw yn coginio cacen gaws.

Daeth Sion o'r Urdd i dreulio awr gyda'r disgyblion i goginio trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Roedd y gacen gaws yn flasus iawn, fel gallwch chi weld yn y lluniau...

Treasoning!

Year 8 have been experimenting with giving 'BETTER REASONS' for opinions. Giving reasons for opinions is really important, and as your reasons get better - so do your levels! Look:

 

Level 5 Speaking: “give reasons to explain your ideas”

Level 6 Speaking: “providing reasons to support your views”

Level 7 Speaking: "express opinions using evidence at times"

In this particular task, Year 8 had to give reasons to support (roots) or oppose (wind)  the statement: "Mae'r Bontfaen yn anhygoel". The better their positive reason - the longer the root and the better the negative reason - the stronger the wind. Decide for yourself - will these trees stay standing because of their strong positive roots or fall down due to the strong negative winds?

Cambridge researchers to study evolution of Welsh Language through Twitter!

Wyt ti wedi Trydaru yn y Gymraeg? Have you Tweeted in Welsh?

It has become a social media phenomenon keeping millions of people in touch, whether it’s sharing their politics with followers or updating their mates with the trivia of everyday life.

Now researchers at Cambridge University have launched a new study into the evolution of the Welsh language – using Twitter as the basis of its research.

Researchers are using a database of Welsh tweets to identify the characteristics of the changes in the language.

Dr David Willis from Cambridge’s Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, who is heading up the study says:

“My focus is on the syntax of language – the structure or grammar of sentences – and my long-term aim is to produce a syntactic atlas of Welsh dialects that will add to our understanding of current usage of the language and the multi-stranded influences on it. To do this relies on gathering spoken material from different sectors of the Welsh-speaking population to make comparisons across time and space.”

Welsh students can now study Welsh at Cambridge As part of the University's courses in Linguistics and Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic as degrees.
